The Barnhouse is Going Dark: Exterior Paint Colors

Beautiful, dark exterior paint inspiration + colors!

I love a good dark exterior. You may have noticed dark exteriors are popping up more ofeten these days on Pinterest or Instagram, but bold exteriors have been around for a long time; I’m confident it’s not a passing trend – if done correctly its a classic look that passes the test of time.

When we started on the Barnhouse remodel (click here for before photos + tour), I immediately knew it would have a dark exterior. There’s just something so good about a black barn. It’s a modern twist on a classic look – the perfect combination in my eyes. Just look at these beauties!

Our property is surrounded by vineyards and open pasture; a black(ish) paint will be beautiful against the backdrop of golden grasses and changing colors of the vines. In order for the paint to be complimentary to the landscape, correct undertones of the black were important. I was looking for a black synchronal with nature – greens, browns, and blues. I narrowed my selection to two colors: GreenBlack & Iron Ore, both by Sherwin Williams.

Last Sunday we came home from Church and the sun was shining, the weather was warm – perfect conditions for painting. I had picked up the samples the previous week (HIGHLY recommend sampling colors first. Sherwin Williams charged me $6 – they were having a 20% off special, ha! – for a quart of sample paint. Place samples all over the room or exterior you’re painting, next to each finish, in every light possible). I painted samples on the North and South sides of the barn, next to the black windows, and up near the galvanized roof.

After seeing the samples on the barn, I ultimately choose Iron Ore. It’s soft, moody, classic and compliments the natural surroundings (which was most important to me). Really happy we made the decision to go dark – she’s going to be a beauty Clark!
